Consumer Resources

TMHC is committed to providing the mental health community with the most current resources to promote policy changes at the state and local levels that increase the public’s access to crucial services.

The following is an alphabetical list of available resources and organizations:

Barrier Free Communities

  • ADAPT of Texas (website) Promotes services/rights that make it possible for disabled Texans to live in their homes-not nursing homes. We increase accessibility to public places, transportation, and housing.
  • Advocacy Inc. (website) is a nonprofit corporation funded by the United States Congress to protect and advocate for the legal rights of people with disabilities in Texas. It is not a part of state or local government. It has offices throughout the State of Texas, and a Board of Directors appointed mainly by disability organizations. The Board of Directors selects annual priorities, which are the issues the organization will focus on that year.
  • Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law (website) is the leading national legal advocate for people with mental disabilities. Through precedent-setting litigation and in the public policy arena, the Bazelon Center works to advance and preserve the rights of people with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities. For three decades, the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law has been the nation's leading legal advocate for people with mental disabilities. Precedent-setting litigation has outlawed institutional abuse and won protections against arbitrary confinement. In the courts and in Congress, advocacy has opened up public schools, workplaces, housing and other opportunities for community life.
  • Project Mend, Inc. (website) Helps disabled, low income people who cannot afford repairs on basic medical equipment (wheel chairs, canes, etc.) by providing the repairs and other essential services.
  • Helping the Aging, Needy, & Disabled, Inc. (formerly Services for the Elderly, Inc.) (website) Provides a continuum of in-home and community services for disadvantaged, frail elderly and severely disabled people as the alternative to institutional care.
  • The Disability Policy Consortium (DPC) (website) is an independent group of statewide advocacy organizations that strives to achieve the development and full implementation of public policy that promotes and supports the rights, inclusion, integration, and independence of Texans with disabilities.

  Charity

  • Community Shares of Texas (website) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit federation of charitable organizations. CSTX raises money through payroll deduction and provide technical assistance to their members. There are volunteering opportunities in Texas.

 Community Education

  • American Friends Service Committee (website) AFSC engages and educates average citizens on the pressing issues of the day such as immigration, poverty, and peace.
  • Center for Public Policy Priorities (website) The Texas hub for information/research on policies to improve the economic conditions of low- and moderate-income Texans. CPPP does this through research, public education, advocacy and technical assistance.
  • Gray Panthers (website) Intergenerational volunteers educate the public about ageism and social and economic justice, focusing on health and long-term care, Social Security, affordable housing, and living wages.
  • New York DUI (website) The New York DUI Foundation is an advocacy site dedicated to educating about the dangers of drinking and driving. Furthermore, it is the duty of the DUI Foundation to prevent happenings such as these. 
  • Sustainable Food Center (website) We promote the importance of food in developing healthy self-sustaining communities through community gardens, farmers' markets, and La Cocina Alegre cooking and nutrition training.
  • Texans for Gun Safety (website)  A grassroots organization dedicated to significantly reducing gun violence through programs at high-risk schools and public education efforts.
  • TEXAS ROSE (Ratepayers Organization to Save Energy) (website)  We are your consumer watchdog and information resource on affordable electricity, deregulation, weatherization, and environmentally friendly electricity production.

  Decent, Affordable Homes

  • Austin Tenants Council (website)  Provide counseling, mediation and education for tenants to prevent homelessness, discrimination, and mistreatment of tenants.
  • Casa Marianella (website) Provides housing, food, clothing, Spanish-language counseling, English as a Second Language classes, and other assistance to Latin American refugees and homeless men, women, and children.
  • Community Partnership for the Homeless (website)  Develops transitional shelters for homeless veterans, and affordable housing for families with children; organizes the collaborations needed to provide case management and other essential services.
  • House the Homeless, Inc. (website)  An all-volunteer organization led by homeless and formerly homeless individuals. Programs include: shoe drives, thermal underwear drives, and Universal Living Wage advocacy.

 Employment

  • Employer Assistance and Recruiting Network (EARN) (website) is a free service that connects employers looking for quality employees with skilled job candidates -- your one-stop shop for disability employment information.
  • Job Accommodation Network (JAN) (website) is a free consulting service that provides information about job accommodations, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the employability of people with disabilities.
  • US Department of Labor/Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) (website) is an agency within the U. S. Department of Labor. ODEP provides national leadership to increase employment opportunities for adults and youth with disabilities while striving to eliminate barriers to employment. With the ultimate goal of increasing the number of people with disabilities who work, either as employees or entrepreneurs, ODEP provides policy analysis, technical assistance, development of innovative practices and strategies, and education and outreach to employers, employees and the disability community. Related to these efforts, ODEP also conducts a variety of employment-related programs and initiatives. ODEP has awarded several grants to develop innovative programs and provide technical assistance to improve employment outcomes for adults and youth with disabilities.

Equality and Justice

  • ACLU Foundation of Texas (website)  We defend the rights of all Texans. Focus areas include preserving privacy and free speech, improving the juvenile justice system, and eliminating racial profiling.
  • Equality Texas Foundation (website)  A non-partisan, public education organization supporting equal treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Texans by removing barriers created by homophobia.
  • Esperanza Center for Social Change (website)  We are a catalyst for change in the community against racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia through publications, leadership training, educational/cultural programs, and technical assistance to community organizations.
  • Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (website)  We are a grassroots, volunteer organization that educates the public about the reality of the death penalty and organizes the community to eliminate it.
  • Texas Inmate Families Association (TIFA), Inc. (website)  Provides education, support and advocacy to the “other forgotten innocent victims of crime” – children and families of inmates; and promotes reform to meet family needs.
  • Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, Inc (website) This nationally recognized legal aid organization provides legal services to our most vulnerable people: migrant workers, domestic violence victims, disabled people, etc.

  • JAN ADA Hot Links Document Center (website) contains useful links and documents helpful for Americans with Disabilities. Links include: legal information regarding ADA, building, housing, and recreation accessibility guidelines, ADA technical assistance manuals, ADA enforcement materials, and more.
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Mental Health Information Center (website) provides information about mental health via a toll-free telephone number (800-789-2647), this web site, and more than 600 publications. The National Mental Health Information Center was developed for users of mental health services and their families, the general public, policy makers, providers, and the media. Information Center staff members are skilled at listening and responding to questions from the public and professionals. The staff quickly directs callers to Federal, State, and local organizations dedicated to treating and preventing mental illness. The Information Center also has information on Federal grants, conferences, and other events.
  • Family Friendly Fun (website) offers family fun, family life and family health resources to promote a fun and healthy family life. The website offers chat rooms, topics of interest files, news, and awards pertaining to family orientation.
  • On this site, Insider's Guide to Mental Health Resources (website), Dr. John Grohol keeps you current on changes in Web and E-mail addresses since The Insider's Guide's publication. He also provides brief listings for important new mental health resources that have come online since the book's publication. Updates are posted quarterly.
  • The goal of Internet Mental Health (website) is to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness throughout the world. This website contains the following pertaining to mental illness/health: introduction, disorder descriptions, discussions, medication descriptions, magazine listings, book listings, online diagnosis advice, quality of life-assessment, research, links, help, and editorial.
  • Mental Health Infosource (website) -- CME, Inc. is a leading independent provider of continuing medical education in the United States. They specialize in providing medical education opportunities for primary care physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
  • PsyPlexus (website) is a portal for mental health professionals. Its contents include many free-access review articles, links to hundreds of free articles for mental health professionals, a blog with tips on Clinical Psychopharmacology, latest headlines from journals and other resources on mental health, a discussion forum, and a page to search various online resources on mental health.

  Medical Agencies and Doctors

  • The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (website) is a professional medical organization comprised of child and adolescent psychiatrists trained to promote healthy development and to evaluate, diagnose, and treat children and adolescents and their families who are affected by disorders of feeling, thinking and behavior. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are physicians who are uniquely qualified to integrate knowledge about human behavior and development from biological, psychological, familial, social, and cultural perspectives with scientific, humanistic, and collaborative approaches to diagnosis, treatment and the promotion of mental health.
  • American Psychiatric Association (website) is a medical specialty society recognized world-wide. Its 37,000 U.S. and international member physicians work together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental disorder, including mental retardation and substance-related disorders. It is the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry. Its vision is a society that has available, accessible quality psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
  • Based in Washington, DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) (website) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With more than 150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide.
  • Anxiety Disorders Association of America (website) is the only national, non-profit membership organization dedicated to informing the public, healthcare professionals and legislators that anxiety disorders are real, serious and treatable. The ADAA promotes the early diagnosis, treatment and cure of anxiety disorders, and is committed to improving the lives of the people who suffer from them. Members include clinicians and researchers who treat and study anxiety disorders, individuals with anxiety disorders and their families, and other interested individuals. Through individual and corporate contributions and membership dues, the ADAA is able to provide educational information and resources on anxiety disorders and treatment providers to those in need. The ADAA is guided by its Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board.
  • Dr. Ivan’s Depression Central (website) is Internet's central clearinghouse for information on all types of depressive disorders and on the most effective treatments for individuals suffering from Major Depression, Manic-Depression (Bipolar Disorder), Cyclothymia, Dysthymia and other mood disorders. This site is maintained by Dr. Ivan Goldberg, with no financial support from any public, nonprofit, or pharmaceutical source.
  • Harmony Place (website), Exclusively for Women, is internationally renowned for providing intimate, personalized programs for women seeking treatment of addiction and dual disorders. Our residential program synthesizes concepts drawn from proactive relapse prevention education, cognitive and psychodynamic theories and 12-Step philosophy to provide our clients with a strong foundation to support long-term recovery.
  • Home Nursing  (website) Accredited Nursing Home Health specializes in providing dependable and compassionate home nursing to individuals in a home setting.

Public Health and Community Wellness

  • Beat Aides, Inc. (website)  We provide the highest quality of HIV/AIDS prevention, education, and services while promoting community-wide understanding of the impact of the HIV/AIDS disease.
  • Breast Cancer Resource Center (website)  We help breast cancer patients on their journey through treatment and recovery by providing essential information, education and support needed at this stressful time.
  • NARA Pro-Choice Texas Foundation (website)  This nonpartisan, Pro-Choice education organization provides grassroots training, research, and education on all aspects of reproductive health and well-being.
  • Animal Trustees (website)  Provides low cost spay and neuter clinics, quality, low cost animal wellness care, and surgery and foster/adoption for “special needs” pets.
  • Central Texas SPCA (website)  This no-kill shelter finds forever families for animals and provides food, medical care, and a very personal touch. Private donations are our sole support.

  • Texas Folklife (website)  Celebrates and preserves traditional arts through performances, exhibitions, media projects and programs such as the community residencies, apprenticeships and “folk arts in education.”
  • Writers’ League of Texas (website)  The creative learning community for youth and adult writers! We provide rich education and talent-sharing opportunities for people at all levels of skill and experience.
  • Zachary Scott Theatre (website)  Offers top quality professional theatre, which celebrates diversity and provides cross-cultural education for youth through four major initiatives, including the theatre arts school.

  Other

  • For more than sixty years, the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health (website) has managed both operating programs and grant making activities in support of mental health service and research projects in Texas. An administrative unit of The University of Texas at Austin, the Hogg Foundation defines mental health broadly and is interested in programs that implement and evaluate innovative projects that are designed to meet the broad mental health needs of Texans. While the Foundation invites proposals dealing with any aspect of mental health service delivery, program development, research, and education, priority is given to projects targeting its three primary program areas: Children and Their Families, Minority Mental Health, and Youth Development.
  • Tri-Healing is an agency that provides chemical dependency counseling as well as dual diagnosis. Often works with clients that are faced with many issues such as depression, anxiety, and many others.
